Facility/Trail Descriptions: There are five miles of wooded
trails winding through the Paint Branch Valley. This is a favorite
area for walkers and horseback riders in eastern Montgomery County. It
is a quiet secluded park in a densely populated area. It is easy
to think you are in the backwoods out in the country. It is best
for a relaxing slow ride, but there are areas suitable for cantering. It
is easy to ride two to three hours in this park if you explore the nooks
and crannies. There is plenty of stream water but little grass for
grazing.
Ironically this is the park that inspired the creation of Trail Riders
of Today (TROT) when it was under threat of development in the early 1980’s. Although
TROT’s efforts were successful at the time, the park will soon be
devastated by the Inter-County Connector which traverses the entire length
of the park. The six lane highway will be built across it from Old
Columbia Pike to New Hampshire Avenue.
