Purpose:
The West Friendship Park Agricultural Focus Group undertook the important task of envisioning
innovative agricultural programs and uses for the expansive 380-acre county-owned park in West
Friendship, Maryland. Comprised of 23 passionate individuals, including agricultural leaders, engaged
citizens, dedicated elected officials, and representatives from agricultural-related county agencies, this
diverse group convened over three insightful meetings. During their initial gathering, they brainstormed
a wealth of potential agricultural initiatives, setting the stage for a fruitful dialogue. The second meeting
featured an engaging tour of the park, allowing members to connect their ideas with the landscape. In
their final session, the group divided into smaller teams to meticulously review and prioritize the myriad
suggestions generated in previous discussions. They thoughtfully categorized their recommendations
into three key areas: Agricultural Support, Agricultural Education, and Agricultural Recreation, ranking
each proposal by its significance. This collaborative effort reflects a vibrant commitment to enhancing
the agricultural landscape of West Friendship Park, fostering community engagement, and promoting
sustainable practices for future generations.

Please read the equestrian portion below. Other great ideas for the property include Farm Museum, campground, archery, agricultural tourism to teach public about conservation practices, space for 4-H & FFA to raise hogs and small ruminants, space for new and beginning farmer programs, freezer and cold storage for farmers, etc.

Agricultural Recreation:
NOTE: The West Friendship Park Agricultural Focus Group ranked Horseback Riding Trails,
Archery / Shooting Area, and Campground for organizations as number one priority under
Agricultural Recreation at the park.

  1. Horseback riding trails
The county has expressed a commitment to preserving and enhancing horseback riding
opportunities on its existing trails at the West Friendship Park, ensuring that equestrians can
continue to enjoy the natural splendor of the area. With plans in place to improve and expand
the existing riding and walking trails, there lies an exciting opportunity to foster a vibrant
community of horse lovers. However, it is essential to strike a balance as overcrowding can
diminish the experience of horseback riding. Organizations like DEHR and others are poised to
leverage these trails as a platform for transitioning horses to riding, thus promoting both the
sport and the well-being of these magnificent animals. Dedicated horseback riding trails will
continue to cultivate Howard County’s thriving equestrian culture that inspires passion,
connection, and a deep appreciation for the art of horseback riding. Cost to maintain the trails
and a position to ensure they are clear and safe.
    Approximate Cost: $150,000 or less
